Preparing your Yard for Spring
Landscaping is an important part of your home. It gives the outside of your home color and life, and also adds value through improving overall curb appeal. Before you know it, spring will be here and it’ll be time to start planting perennials, a spring garden or seeding your lawn. But there are several things that you need to do before you start planting to ensure that your landscaping blooms in spring. Here are some simple, yet effective, tips to help prepare your yard for spring.
5 Tips to Prepare your Yard for Spring
Gather your Tools
Unless you have a landscaping crew that takes care of your yard, you are going to need the right tools to prepare your landscape for spring. Now is the time to take inventory of what you have and what you may need during the preparation process. You’re going to be pruning and clearing debris, as well as applying fertilizer or mulch to certain areas of your yard. That will require gloves, shears, a shovel, rake and various other tools.
PRO TIP: Don’t start on an area of your yard if you don’t have the right equipment to complete your task.
Clear the Area
The first thing you need to do when preparing your landscaping for spring is to clear the area of all the debris that has accumulated throughout the winter. The trellis areas, potted plants, planters and your lawn have been subjected to the elements and debris from trees all winter long. There are several ways you can go about achieving this from rakes to air blowers. Whichever method you choose, remove all the unwanted debris and weeds before doing anything else.
PRO TIP: You can use your leaves, yard clippings and even pine needles to make your own mulch. Click here for a full guide.
Prune
Late winter or early spring is a fantastic time to prune your shrubs, trees and flowers. The branch structure is more visible during this time of year, rather than earlier in winter, which makes it easier to prune.
PRO TIP: To ensure that your plants heal quickly, add soil to any of the areas in which you trimmed. This allows them to soak up the nutrients in the soil while they’re healing.
Lawn Work
Lawns can be tricky. But if you start to prep them during the late winter, you can reap the results come spring. If you’ve already cleared the area, you can add pre-emergent, fertilizer to feed your grass and weed killer to your lawn. There are products that are both weed killer and pre-emergent, so you can consolidate to one product like this if you wanted to. Don’t expect for your grass to grow fast during this time, you’re giving your lawn the nutrients it needs to grow in the spring.
PRO TIP: Mow your lawn early and often in order for your grass to grow properly. If you let the grass grow too long before mowing, you stunt the roots so they aren’t able to grow.
